I agree, though, that IU may have been in a better position had Knight resigned earlier. At the same time, you knew damn well that IU fans would have revolted had he been fired without the type of "blow up" that resulted in his firing in 2000. And God forbid the next coach didn't do well. We never would have heard the end of it from the "if Bob Knight was still our coach..." crowd. It would have been a lose/lose situation: you either fire a legend and get lambasted by your fan base or you keep the legend and toil in mediocrity. But damn, it would have been nice to get some of those guys you mentioned.GMYHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16431029754595900511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15845843.post-202733033044720032008-03-26T19:00:00.000-05:002008-03-26T19:00:00.000-05:00let's get one thing straight: Bobby Knight was toa...let's get one thing straight: Bobby Knight was toast. he was done. he did damage to IU's program in his final 5-7 years. he failed to evolve, and it started the chain reaction that led to today. i distinctly recall sitting the IMU one sunday morning on a visit to IU with my family, and having knight and his coaching staff sit down with two recruits, whose names escape me, but turned out to be great players at other universities. i heard their entire conversation, especially the part about how if you come in even a minute past curfew, you'll be up at 530am running in assembly hall. knight was careful to emphasize an ironically strict zero tolerance policy.

had knight been tossed or resigned earlier, perhaps IU basketball would've been in a better position to evolve, too. perhaps they would've gotten those players. perhaps IU would've kept its juggernaut reputation roaring along and a legend would be in his second decade on the bench in assembly hall. maybe jason gardner would've gone to IU. maybe sean may would've gone to IU. maybe josh mcroberts. maybe greg fuckin oden.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
