Beer #3 of the beer advent calendar is an homage to one of the great live music clubs in the country: First Avenue in Minneapolis. Home to many scenes in Purple Rain, First Avenue was not only a key club in Prince's early years, but also for many other Twin Cities acts, like The Replacements and Soul Asylum. Sadly, during the three months I lived in Minneapolis, I don't recall my parents ever taking me to see any live music, much less to First Avenue (then called Uncle Sam's). But anyway, Surly is perhaps Minneapolis's best-known brewery, and they decided to brew a sessionable golden ale and name it First Avenue +1. It's an easy-drinking ale with a little bit of hops, but not too much. This is definitely a beer you could slam a few of while listening to The Hold Steady.
