Our weekly look at COVID-related Retro Videos of the Week takes us back to Faith No More's fantastic 1989 album The Real Thing. The band's mixture of metal, funk, and rap was unlike much else in music at the time, but it definitely worked. In addition to being the band's first-charting album (reaching #11 on the Billboard album charts) and only platinum-selling album in the U.S., it spawned the group's biggest hit single, "Epic," which went to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 (the band's only Top 40 hit). Songs like "Falling to Pieces" and "From Out of Nowhere" also received some airplay on MTV and were minor hits on a couple international charts.
The band made videos for those three songs and "Surprise! You're Dead!," which is today's selection. Here's the thing about COVID-19. While it generally kills people who are elderly, immuno compromised, or have other health issues, there are plenty of perfectly healthy people who have caught it and died. One day you're at a massive house party with a bunch of your fellow millennials, all indoors, sharing cups and bongs without proper sanitization, talking at close range to strangers, and posting shit to IG to show how cool you are. Then a few days later, you can't smell anything, you're puking your brains out, and you have a 102 fever. A few days after that, you're on a ventilator. A few days after that, surprise! You're dead.
