Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of Coolin' At The Playground Ya Know!, the debut album from Another Bad Creation. Discovered by Michael Bivins of Bell Biv DeVoe, Another Bad Creation (aka ABC) were a group of pre-teens from Atlanta who briefly took the world by storm -- and were even mentioned in Boyz II Men's iconic "Motownphilly" ("Boyz II Men / ABC / BBD / The East Coast family").
Coolin' at the Playground Ya Know! was a pretty instant success, reaching #7 on the Billboard album chart and #2 on the Billboard R&B album chart, eventually going platinum in the U.S. The first two singles from the album -- "Iesha" and "Playground" -- both reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard R&B singles chart, and Billboard Dance Tracks chart.
The group rode the wave of success to appear in Michael Jackson's video for "Black or White" (two of the group members, anyway), as characters in Robert Townsend's 1993 superhero comedy The Meteor Man, and on a 1991 episode of In Living Color, on which they sang "Iesha."
Voices began to change, and their second album, 1993's It Ain't What U Wear, It's How U Play, failed to chart and failed to produce any charting singles, and though ABC has never officially broken up, they haven't released any music since then.
Of their two big hit singles, I like "Iesha" better, so that's what I'm going with for this week's Retro Video of the Week.
