25 years ago yesterday, Phil Anselmo, lead singer of groove metal pioneers Pantera, overdosed on heroin following a concert in Dallas. He had cardiac arrest and died for a couple minutes, before being revived by paramedics. Just say no, kids!
In honor of the anniversary of Anselmo escaping death, this week's Retro Video of the Week is Pantera's 1990 metal classic "Cowboys From Hell." The album of the same name is considered one of the first in the groove metal genre. The song has a killer riff, courtesy of guitarist of the late Dimebag Darrell, and the song is about how the band was from Texas, which definitely wasn't where most metal bands of the era were from.
