Today's CoronaVinyl category is "B," and we're going with some late '80s pop, courtesy of Boy Meets Girl's second album, 1988's Reel Life.
Boy Meets Girl was a duo comprised of George Merrill (boy) and Shannon Rubicam (girl), who married at some point in the mid '80s. They found success both as songwriters for others and in their own right. They wrote two #1 songs for Whitney Houston, 1985's "How Will I Know" and 1987's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." And they also sang backing vocals on Deniece Williams's 1984 #1 hit "Let's Hear It For The Boy."
They released their self-titled debut album in 1985, which featured their first Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, "Oh Girl" (#39) -- not to be confused with the Chi-Lites' 1972 #1 hit of the same name. Three years later, they released Reel Life, which featured their most successful and well-known song, "Waiting For a Star to Fall," which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. In addition, "Bring Down the Moon" went to #49 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went to #50 on the Billboard album chart.
Boy Meets Girl recorded another album that was supposed to have been released in 1990, but was shelved by their record company. They divorced in 2000, but continued to make music together, releasing their latest EP earlier this year.
The Spotify version of the album is an expanded edition with two bonus tracks.
Favorite Song on Side 1: "Waiting For a Star to Fall"
Their big hit is a catchy '80s pop song, complete with a sax and a memorable chorus that will become an ear worm.
Favorite Song on Side 2: "One Sweet Dream"
This one is a duet (while other songs on the album are mainly sung by either Boy or Girl), and even though it's a duet, I could see this fitting in on a Debbie Gibson or Tiffany album of the same era.
