Today's CoronaVinyl category is "B," and I went with the aptly title IV, the fourth studio album released by Canadian jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD, released in 2016.
I got this when I was in the Vinyl Me, Please record club. It was one of the monthly selections, and it probably wouldn't have been what I would have chosen, but so be it. As you can see, the vinyl is a nice plum color, and the Vinyl Me, Please edition also split up the album into four sides.
The band formed in 2010, and they have melded their love of jazz and hip hop since then. They have collaborated with various hip hop artists, including Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah, and Tyler, The Creator. In addition, they have also produced songs for hip hop artists, garnering them two Grammys for producing tracks on other artists' albums: one for Best Rap Album in 2018 for Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. (they co-produced "Lust") and another for Best Progressive R&B Album last year for Thundercat's It Is What It Is (they co-produced "King of the Hill").
On IV, in addition to their band-only tracks, which are generally more straightforward jazz, they collaborated with with Future Islands lead singer Sam Herring ("Time Moves Slow"), saxophonist and indie rock collaborator Colin Stetson ("Confessions Pt. II), DJ and producer Kaytranada ("Lavender"), hip hop artist Mick Jenkins ("Hyssop of Love"), and singer-songwriter Charlotte Day Wilson ("In Your Eyes"). All in all, it wasn't bad. It's not my bag, but it was good to listen to while I was working.
The album went to #178 on the Billboard album chart and #89 on the Canadian albums chart, as well as #1 on the Billboard Jazz albums and Billboard Contemporary Jazz albums charts. I'm not going to give you a favorite song for each side, since some only have two songs on them, but I'll just say that "Confessions Pt. II" is my favorite song on the album. It has a nice funk and hip hop vibe.
