Though the album topped out at #11 on the Billboard album chart -- ending The Purple One 's string of five consecutive Top 10 albums and was the only studio album he released between 1981 and 1994 that didn't reach the Top Ten -- it nonetheless further showcased Prince's genius. He plays pretty much every instrument on the album and, of course, wrote all the songs. The album was also a huge hit internationally, topping the album charts in six other countries (and the European Albums chart) and reaching the Top 10 in another seven countries.
The first single released from Lovesexy was "Alphabet St.," which is a funky little pop song. It, too, was a massive hit, both in the U.S. and around the world. The song went to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- his 13th Top 10 hit and 17th Top 40 hit in the U.S. -- #3 on the Billboard R&B singles chart, #1 on the pop charts in New Zealand and Norway, and the Top 10 on 12 other international singles charts.
The video is very Prince. He is dancing around with his lion's mane of hair and a chest-baring blouse while letters and words fly all over the place around him in space.
