This past Sunday would have been George Harrison's 75th birthday, so I had to go with a George song for this week's Retro Video of the Week. I already did "Got My Mind Set On You" a few years ago, so I'm going with "When We Was Fab," which was also off George's 1987 album Cloud Nine. Harrison wrote the song along with ELO's Jeff Lynne (who was also a member of the Traveling Wilburys with George) as a half-tongue-in-cheek reference to his time in The Beatles. The song is written with a Beatle-esque sound, and the video is kind of a tribute to his former band as well. Ringo plays drums on the track and appears in the video. John's likeness appears in the video briefly. And that walrus playing the bass in the video is rumored to be Paul, although bass duties on the actual recording were handled by Lynne (who is seen playing violin in the video). You will also notice Paul Simon pushing a fruit cart, and Gary Wright -- of "Dream Weaver" fame -- plays piano on the song.
"When We Was Fab" hit #23 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Harrison's last Top 40 hit in the U.S. It also reached #25 on the UK pop charts and #10 on the Canadian pop charts.
