Updated Championship Week Predictions

Last night, some shit went down in the NEC quarterfinals.  (That's the first time I have ever said that, and presumably the last.)  2-seed Mount St. Mary's fell to 7-seed Robert Morris, marking the second year in a row the Colonials have won their quarterfinal game as a 7-seed.  And 3-seed St. Francis (PA) was upended by 6-seed Fairleigh Dickinson, meaning both of the schools that met in last years NEC Tournament final have been bumped in the quarters.  This leaves 1-seed Wagner with a pretty solid chance of taking the crown, given that it is the only remaining team in the NEC Tournament with a winning record.  The teams are re-seeded for the semis (which aren't until Saturday), so Robert Morris will play at Wagner, while FDU will play at 4-seed LIU-Brooklyn.

In the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, 12-seed Iowa beat 13-seed Illinois, ending a rough first season for Brad Underwood in Champaign.  The Fighting Illini haven't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2013 -- their longest drought since they went 18 years between appearances from 1963 to 1981.  In case you're counting, Illinois has still never won an NCAA championship.  In the other game, 14-seed Rutgers -- cheered on by a bunch of bridge-and-tunnel assholes from New Jersey -- took down 11-seed Minnesota.  Between injuries and suspensions, this season was nothing short of a disaster for Richard Pitino's Golden Gophers.  They made the NCAA Tournament last year and opened the year ranked #15, but will finish the year 15-17 after starting 13-3.  The Scarlet Knights won their first game of the Big Ten Tournament for the second year in a row as a 14-seed.  They will be taking on my Hoosiers tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, in the first round of the OVC, 5-seed Tennessee Tech beat 8-seed SIU Edwardsville, and 7-seed Eastern Illinois held off 6-seed Tennessee State.  Somewhere Carlos Rogers is crying.

Today is when things start to ramp just up a little, as 2 more tournaments start (the MAAAAAAAC and the Wichita State-less MVC), and 7 tournaments have games.  We've got our first set of semifinals in the Atlantic Sun.  You're thinking to yourself, I can handle it.  Yeah, maybe tonight, and maybe even tomorrow night.  But before you know it, you'll be streaming a quarterfinal Big Sky game at one in the morning.  Your wife's all, "Turn that damn phone off, you rat-dicked son of a bitch!  I'm trying to sleep."  And you're all, "Mind your business, devil woman! Idaho and Idaho State are going into overtime."  And she's all, "You don't even care about those teams!"  And you're all, "Do you have any idea what this means?!  For these kids?!  For the State of Idaho?!"  You'll be so engulfed you won't even hear the whir of her hand as it glides through the air before landing forcefully on your ear.
