My beer advent calendar started with a proper winter beer bang with Riverlands Juleøl, which is aptly described on the can as a spiced holiday ale. Riverlands is located in the western Chicago suburb of St. Charles, and I've generally enjoyed the beers that I've had from them, especially their stouts. Juleøl is what a winter beer should taste like. It's a dark and malty winter warmer with a nice combination of ginger, cinnamon, and orange peel. At 7%, it's sufficiently heavy, but not over the top.
