Today's CoronaVinyl category is "J," and I went with Rickie Lee Jones's 1983 EP Girl At The Volcano.
Jones is a singer-songwriter best known for her Top 5 1979 ode to an animatronic mouse's love life, "Chuck E.'s In Love." Girl At The Volcano is an EP of seven songs, most of which are covers and two of which were recorded live. The version I have is a 10-inch record. It's not really my bag, as it's generally slower and ballady, but it's not bad.
The Spotify version of the album has a bonus track.
Favorite Song on Side 1: "Letter from the 9th Ward/Walk Away Renée"
This is a mini medley, with a short instrumental original by Jones that serves as the intro, followed by a slowed-down, piano-heavy cover of Left Banke's 1966 Top 5 hit "Walk Away Renée."
Favorite Song on Side 2: "Under the Boardwalk"
I like The Drifters, and Jones covers one of their most well-known songs. This version is kind of a stripped down version with a Caribbean flair, with Jones helped on vocals by several others.
