Championship Week is Upon Us!

First and foremost, happy belated Casimir Pulaski Day to my fellow Chicagoans, even if the kids don't get a day off of school for it anymore.  I sincerely hope all your submarines had screen doors yesterday.

But celebrations of Polish-born Revolutionary War generals aside, Championship Week is here, folks.  We've done it.  We've made it to the most exciting month of sports.  Between tonight's match-ups in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament, the First Round of the Big South Tournament, the first round of the Horizon League Tournament, and the First Round of the Patriot League Tournament, and the final horn in the Big Ten Tournament championship game on March 15, 323 teams will play a total of 291 conference tournament games.  32 teams will be crowned conference champions, earning automatic bids to the greatest tournament in the history of sport:  the NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  this is my favorite time of the sporting year.  Championship Week and the NCAA Tournament are, in the words of Tina Turner, simply the best.  They are more dramatic than the playoffs in any of the four major pro sports and any other major college sport.  The urgency and immediacy of one-and-done college basketball is unrivaled.  Seniors play their last games, and for all but a handful, not only will they finish their college careers with a loss, but likely their basketball careers.  On the other end of the spectrum, watching a low-major or mid-major team win its conference tournament to clinch an NCAA Tournament berth is one of the purest forms of elation you will ever see.  And the buzzer beaters.  Good God, the buzzer beaters!

Teams who have no business competing put together storybook runs.  Teams who should dominate fall apart.  You and your team have hope until that hope is lost.  The regular season means nothing.  Hell, in last year's Championship Week, 19 of the 32 conference tournament winners were not the top-seeded team, and 7 of the 32 tournament winners were seeded 4 or lower:
4-seed:  2 (Gardner-Webb (Big South); North Dakota State (Summit))
5-seed:  3 (Iowa State (Big 12); Bradley (MVC); Auburn (SEC))
6-Seed:  2 (St. Louis (Atlantic 10); Oregon (Pac-12))

Two schools punched their first-ever tickets to the dance in 2019 -- Gardner-Webb in the Big South and Abilene Christian in the Southland.  Army, The Citadel, St. Francis (Brooklyn), and William & Mary remain the only four original Division 1 schools that have never made the NCAA Tournament (though Army was invited in 1968 and chose to play in the NIT instead).  While Army, The Citadel, and St. Francis Brooklyn are respectively the 4-, 10- and 8-seeds in their conference tournaments, William & Mary is the 2-seed in the CAA Tournament, so there is hope for The Tribe this year.

And, of course, as the last ten NCAA Tournaments have shown us -- with the likes of Butler, BYU, Cornell, Dayton, Florida Gulf Coast, Gonzaga, LaSalle, Loyola, Nevada, Northern Iowa, Ohio, Richmond, San Diego State, St. Mary's, Southern Illinois, Wichita State, VCU, and Xavier all making it to the Sweet Sixteen or beyond, and 16-seed UMBC upsetting 1-seed Virginia in 2018 -- mid-majors and low-majors should not be overlooked in the Big Dance.  Consider Championship Week your opportunity to beef up your knowledge of this year's college basketball teams before you fill out your brackets in two short weeks.

Over the next two weeks, I will be making Championship Week predictions as conference tournaments begin and/or are seeded.  Thus far, 12 conferences have ended their regular seasons and set their conference tournament brackets.  I'll try to update this daily, although I will be out of town from the 13th through the 15th, so please accept my apologies in advance for my failure to post updates on the last two days of Championship Week.

As a frame of reference, of my initial Championship Week predictions last year, I was 15 of 32 in correctly predicting the eventual conference tournament champion (for the third year in a row).  I'm nothing if not consistently mediocre, both in college basketball predictions and life.  This college basketball season is just as wide open as the last few years -- a record-tying seven teams have been ranked #1 this season -- so I don't expect to improve upon that mark this year.  But hey, I have no money on it anyway, so what the hell do you care?

Since last year, there have been a couple additions and subtractions in some mid- and low-major conferences, some conferences have had to slightly adjust due to ineligible teams, and some conference tournaments move up in the schedule (notably the Mountain West) while several moved back.  This means that we are going to have two more championship games on the final Saturday of Championship Week (3/14 this year) than in years' past.  Giggity.

The first bids to be clinched will be this weekend:
-Mountain West:  March 7
-Ohio Valley:  March 7
-Atlantic Sun:  March 8
-Big South:  March 8
-Missouri Valley:  March 8

With that, here are the tournaments starting today, the tournaments with games today, bids up for grab today, who has already clinched an automatic berth, and my predictions for the remaining conference tournaments.

Because I am unhealthily obsessed with college basketball in March -- to the detriment of my marriage, children, friendships, work, sleep schedule, sanity, wallet, water aerobics league, and loyalty to Set -- I have not only listed out every game and my predictions, but the date, time, and TV station(s) on which the game will appear, even if it's just local, regional, or online, to the extent that information is available.  Some conference tournament websites are better than others.  I want this to be as comprehensive as possible, so that you can always come here to figure out when any given team is playing.  I love you so much, you guys.  Don't you ever forget it.

Remaining Tournaments (all times are Eastern; to the extent there are teams that have clinched seeds in tournament fields that are not completely set, I will put those in)

Updated Big Ten Tournament Seeding Predictions and NCAA Tournament Resumes

It was a busy and important weekend in Big Ten basketball.  On Saturday, Michigan State upset first-place Maryland in College Park. 78-66, to put some further pressure on the Terps, as they are now only one game ahead of MSU, Illinois, and Wisconsin for first place, with two games left.  One more win clinches a tie for the Big Ten title for Maryland, and if they win both of their remaining games, they will win the title outright.  In the other game on Saturday, Iowa held off Penn State, 77-68, at home.

Yesterday, IU lost a heartbreaker at Illinois, 67-66, thanks to some questionable no-calls in the last few minutes.  Elsewhere, Ohio State beat Michigan at home, 77-63, Northwestern picked up the last-place tiebreaker over Nebraska with a hard-fought 81-76 OT win in Lincoln, and Minnesota let a lead slip away in Madison against Wisconsin, to lose 71-69 and essentially seal Minnesota's fate as far as an at large bid to the Big Dance.

If my predictions hold true -- which I think we both know is unlikely -- there will be a four-way tie for second place in the Big Ten.  By the way, Big Ten teams now own 7 of the 8 hardest strengths of schedule in college basketball (and 11 of the top 15).

Next games
The next games take place Tuesday (all times Eastern):
-Maryland at Rutgers (7:00 p.m.; BTN)
-Michigan State at Penn State (7:00 p.m.; ESPN)
-Purdue at Iowa (9:00 p.m.; BTN)

Current Standings
Here are the current standings, with the conference record, each team's remaining Big Ten games, and my predictions.  I will try to update these after every day or every couple days of games.

1.  Maryland (13-5):  at Rutgers (L); Michigan (W)
2 (tie).  Illinois (12-6):  at Ohio State (L); Iowa (W)
2 (tie).  Michigan State (12-6):  at Penn State (L); Ohio State (W)
2 (tie).  Wisconsin (12-6):  Northwestern (W); at Indiana (L)
5 (tie).  Iowa (11-7):  Purdue (W); at Illinois (L)
5 (tie).  Penn State (11-7):  Michigan State (W); at Northwestern (W)
7.  Ohio State (10-8):  Illinois (W); at Michigan State (L)
8 (tie).  Michigan (9-9):  Nebraska (W); at Maryland (L)
8 (tie).  Rutgers (9-9):  Maryland (W); at Purdue (L)
10 (tie).  Indiana (8-10):  Minnesota (W); Wisconsin (W)
10 (tie).  Purdue (8-10):  at Iowa (L); Rutgers (W)
12.  Minnesota (7-11):  at Indiana (L); Nebraska (W)
13 (tie).  Nebraska (2-16):  at Michigan (L); at Minnesota (L)
13 (tie).  Northwestern (2-16):  at Wisconsin (L); Penn State (L)

Projected Big Ten Tournament Seeding
Given my predictions and Big Ten tiebreaking rules, here is how the Big Ten Tournament seeds should fall into place (bold means a team has clinched that seed):

1.  Maryland (14-6)
2.  Penn State (13-7) (Get ready for a complicated tiebreaker. All teams have a .500 record against the other three teams with a 13-7 record.  Penn State and Wisconsin both have a 1-0 record vs. Maryland, while MSU is 1-1, and Illinois is 0-2.  Penn State has a 1-1 record against Iowa, while Wisconsin has an 0-1 record.)
3.  Wisconsin (13-7)
4.  Michigan State (13-7)
5.  Illinois (13-7)
6.  Iowa (12-8)
7.  Ohio State (11-9)
8.  Michigan (10-10) (has tiebreaker over IU and Rutgers based on 3-0 record against other two teams, while Rutgers has 1-2 record and IU has 0-2 record)
9.  Rutgers (10-10)
10.  Indiana (10-10)
11.  Purdue (9-11)
12.  Minnesota (8-12)
13.  Northwestern (2-18) (has tiebreaker over Nebraska based on 2-0 head-to-head record)

14.  Nebraska (2-18)

Big Ten Tournament Schedule
In the past, I have also included far-too-premature predictions for every game of the Big Ten Tournament, but, like the last couple years, I'm not even going to try to do that this year until the seeds are more finalized.  However, here are the dates/times/TV schedule for the Big Ten Tournament, which will be in Indianapolis.  All times are Eastern.

NCAA Tournament Resumes for All 14 Big Ten Teams
Here is each Big Ten team's NCAA Tournament resume, including each team's BPI ranking (based on ESPN's BPI rankings), NET ranking (based on the NCAA's NET rankings), overall record against D-1 opponents, BPI strength of schedule, and record against all four NET Quadrants (for an explanation of the NET rankings and the Quadrants, click here, and note that the Quadrants don't include record against non-D1 opponents).  An * means the game was played on a neutral court.  I have categorized the teams by "In," "Bubble," or "Out," which is my best guess, based on what I know right now, as to whether each team is a lock for the NCAA Tournament, is on the bubble, or is out.  For the "In" and "Out" teams, I'm putting them in order based on NET ranking.  For the "Bubble" teams, I am putting them in order based on what I think their likelihood of making the NCAA Tournament is (which may or may not fall in line with the NET or BPI rankings).  For the "Out" teams, I'm just listing the BPI and NET ranking (and record), since their quality wins or bad losses are pretty much irrelevant given their records.
