Championship Week is Here!

Maybe it's the fact that it's so cold out today that I got a brain freeze from walking a few blocks, but I almost forgot that it's March.  With March comes the Madness.  And I'll be damned if the Madness isn't starting today.  Today!  With my Hoosiers' woes the last two months, I have been purposely avoiding the possibility of March, but alas, it cannot be avoided.

Whether or not IU finally pulls its shit together after its exciting win over MSU this past Saturday, the most exciting month of sports begins this evening.  Between tonight's match-ups in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament and the final horn in the Big Ten Tournament championship game on March 17, 325 teams will play a total of 293 conference tournament games.  32 teams will be crowned conference champions, earning automatic bids to the greatest tournament in sports:  the NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament. 

As you may know, this is my favorite time of the sporting year.  Championship Week and the NCAA Tournament are more dramatic than the playoffs in any of the four major pro sports and any other major college sport.  The urgency and immediacy of one-and-done college basketball is unrivaled.  Seniors play their last games, and for all but a handful, not only will they finish their college careers with a loss, but likely their basketball careers.  On the other end of the spectrum, watching a low-major or mid-major team win its conference tournament to clinch an NCAA Tournament berth is one of the purest forms of elation you will ever see.  And the buzzer beaters.  Good God, the buzzer beaters!

Teams who have no business competing put together storybook runs.  Teams who should dominate fall apart.  You and your team have hope until that hope is lost.  Hell, in last year's Championship Week, 18 of the 32 conference tournament winners were not the top-seeded team, and 8 of the 32 tournament winners were seeded 4 or lower:

4-seed:  5 (Cal State Fullerton (Big West), Marshall (Conference USA), Iona (MAAC), LIU-Brooklyn (NEC), Kentucky (SEC))

5-seed:  2 (Michigan (Big Ten), San Diego State (Mountain West))

6-Seed:  1 (North Carolina Central (MEAC))

Only one school punched first-ever ticket to the dance in 2018 -- Lipscomb out of the Atlantic Sun.  Army, The Citadel, St. Francis (Brooklyn), and William & Mary remain the only four original Division 1 schools that have never made the NCAA Tournament (though Army was invited in 1968 and chose to play in the NIT instead).

And, of course, as the last ten NCAA Tournaments have shown us -- with the likes of Butler, BYU, Cornell, Dayton, Florida Gulf Coast, Gonzaga, LaSalle, Loyola, Nevada, Northern Iowa, Ohio, Richmond, San Diego State, St. Mary's, Southern Illinois, Wichita State, VCU, and Xavier all making it to the Sweet Sixteen or beyond, and 16-seed UMBC upsetting 1-seed Virginia last year -- mid-majors and low-majors should not be overlooked in the Big Dance.  Consider Championship Week your opportunity to beef up your knowledge of this year's college basketball teams before you fill out your brackets in two short weeks.

Over the next two weeks, I will be making Championship Week predictions as conference tournaments begin and/or are seeded.  Thus far, 12 conferences have ended their regular seasons and set their conference tournament brackets.  I'll try to update this daily.

As a frame of reference, of my initial Championship Week predictions last year, I was 15 of 32 in correctly predicting the eventual conference tournament champion (for the second year in a row).  This, of course, means absolutely nothing, even if it was better than I usually do.  This college basketball season is just as wide open as the last few years, so I don't expect to improve upon that mark this year.  But hey, I have no money on it anyway, so what the hell do you care?

Since last year, there have been a couple additions and subtractions in some mid- and low-major conferences, as well as some adjustments to how a few conferences slate their conference tournaments (with a few changing their bracket system to give the top two seeds byes into the semis), so don't be alarmed when you see Liberty playing in the A-Sun or Gonzaga not playing until the WCC semis.
