MTV went over the hill this past Sunday at 12:01 a.m. That's right, it's been 40 years since Music Television first graced the airwaves. It cannot be understated how much MTV revolutionized how we consume music, and it was the perfect medium for what would become the Decade of Decadence. The station allowed bands and artists who probably never would have been as popular to become stars, and on the other side, there were a lot of bands and artists who were huge in the late '70s and even into the early '80s because they either didn't bother making videos or because they didn't have the looks that appealed to the masses in that most superficial of decades.
Of course, MTV long ago stopped playing videos, which still irks me. On the flip side, I do love Ridiculousness, so it's not all bad. But anyway, the Buggles' 1979 international hit "Video Killed The Radio Star" was, quite appropriately and presciently, the first video that aired on MTV -- although it only played to homes in New Jersey, which at the time, was the only place where MTV was available. In honor of MTV's 40th, here is that video that started it all.
