Friday will be the 30th anniversary of the release of Primus's debut album, Frizzle Fry, which introduced the world to the funny and funky metal/alt-rock stylings of the band and their virtuoso bass player (and lead singer) Les Claypool. The band would achieve more mainstream success with their next album, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, their major label debut a year later, and then the several albums that followed. But "John the Fisherman" off of Frizzle Fry is one of their classics. Claypool actually wrote it about fishing, as that's what he would often do with his dad during his childhood. The video features a cameo (as one of the fisherman) from Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, who had grown up with Claypool. Everything about the song and video is so early '90s, and I mean that in the best way.
