RESULTS: Round of 32 Voting for Coolest American Man of the Last 100 Years

Alright, folks, the first round of voting for the Coolest American Man of the Last 100 Years is finished, and while it mostly went chalk, there were a few upsets.

I should also note that, if there is a tie in the voting, the tiebreaker goes to the higher seed.  Let's break it down:

The Dead Man's Bracket

Athletes
1-seed Wilt Chamberlain took to 8-seed Frank Gifford like Chuck Bednarik did, cruising to a 100%-0% win.

In a battle of Yankee Hall of Famers, 3-seed Mickey Mantle beat 6-seed Joe DiMaggio 71%-29%

Hollywood
1-seed Paul Newman downed 8-seed Burt Reynolds, 100%-0%, after eating 50 hard-boiled eggs, no less.

2-seed James Dean made quick work of 7-seed Jimmy Stewart, 86% to 14%.

3-seed Bruce Lee crushed 6-seed Marlon Brando, 100%-0%.

In another mild upset, 5-seed Steve McQueen handily topped 4-seed John Wayne, 86%-14%

The Sweet 16 matchups will be:
(1) Paul Newman vs. (5) Steve McQueen
(2) James Dean vs. (3) Bruce Lee

Musicians
The Dead Musicians bracket went chalk, barely.
1-seed Elvis Presley and 4-seed Jim Morrison both secured 100%-0% victories over Johnny Cash and Miles Davis, respectively, setting up a battle between the Lizard King and the King of Rock & Roll.

2-seed Frank Sinatra squeaked out a 57%-43% win over 7-seed James Brown.

3-seed Prince and 6-seed Jimi Hendrix tied, but Prince gets the nod because he was the higher seed.

The Sweet 16 matchups will be:
(1) Elvis Presley vs. (4) Jim Morrison
(2) Frank Sinatra vs. (3) Prince

Other
1-seed Hugh Hefner handed 8-seed Howard Hughes a 100%-0% defeat.

The Living Man's Bracket

Hollywood
This one went chalk, without any major challenges.

1-seed Brad Pitt beat 8-seed Warren Beatty, 71%-29%, in the closest matchup in this sub-bracket.

2-seed Clint Eastwood and 3-seed Matthew McConaughey both beat their opponents -- 7-seed Samuel L. Jackson and 6-seed Michael Douglas, respectively -- 86%-14%.

The Sweet 16 matchups will be:
(1) Bruce Springsteen vs. (4) Slash
(2) Dave Grohl vs. (6) John Mellencamp

Other
I think The Brothers Weeser* (minus Tim, of course) and I would agree that the Living Other was the weakest bracket because there just weren't that many solid choices after our unanimous #1 seed.  You apparently sort of agreed.

The #1, #3, and #4 seeds -- Chuck Yeager, Mark Cuban, and Buzz Aldrin, respectively -- all won 100%-0% over their foes, 8-seed Bill Gates, 6-seed Warren Buffett, and 5-seed Stephen King, respectively.  Meanwhile, 2-seed Howard Stern was trounced by 7-seed Ted Turner, 71%-29%.  This sets up a pilot vs. pilot and maverick billionaire vs. Maverick billionaire.

The Sweet 16 matchups will be:
(1) Chuck Yeager vs. (4) Buzz Aldrin
(3) Mark Cuban vs. (7) Ted Turner

We will post a separate post momentarily for Sweet 16 voting.
