A mere 35 years ago this week, the classic John Hughes '80s teen dramedy Pretty In Pink was released in theaters, and the film's soundtrack was released the same day. The soundtrack heavily features new wave and post-punk songs and bands, making it very '80s.
While there are several good options on the soundtrack, I'm going with the song that provided the movie's namesake, "Pretty In Pink" by The Psychedelic Furs. The song was originally released in 1981, but the band re-recorded and re-released the song in 1986 in conjunction with the movie and the soundtrack.
The re-released version went to #18 on the UK pop charts and narrowly missed the Top 40 in the U.S., reaching #41 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was their biggest hit on either chart up to that point. The song itself is great. It's about a woman who thinks being promiscuous will empower her, not realizing the people she's sleeping with are talking trash about her behind her back. Part of the song make it sound almost like a new wave version of a J. Geils song, and I mean that as a compliment.
