Today's Championship Week theme song is K-Pop star Hyuna's 2011 hit "Bubble Pop" because yesterday, we had some muthafuckin' bubbles pop! And it was an exciting day for college basketball all around, with 23 games decided by 5 points or fewer and/or going to overtime.
Today, there are 40 games over more than 14 hours, starting with the tip off of the Michigan/Maryland game in the Big Ten quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Eastern and ending with two games that tip off at 11:59 p.m. Eastern, the UC Irvine/UC Riverside game in the Big West semis and the Utah State/Colorado State in the Mountain West semis. Please note that, for the bubble teams below, my definition of "the bubble" is any team that's listed in ESPN's Bubble Watch that isn't a "lock." Of course, there are other teams that may play themselves onto the bubble as the week progresses.
Here's what happened in yesterday's action and what we have to look forward to today:
- In the ACC quarterfinals, we had our first bubble pop before the games even started, as 10-seed Duke announced that it had to forfeit its game against 2-seed Florida State because of COVID. This nearly certainly means the Blue Devils will miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995. Elsewhere, 1-seed Virginia beat 8-seed Syracuse in a 72-69 thriller with a three at the buzzer, 6-seed North Carolina beat 3-seed Virginia Tech, 81-73, and 4-seed Georgia Tech withstood 13-seed Miami, 70-66.
- In the Big 12 quarterfinals, top seed Baylor got more than it bargained for against Kansas State, but pulled out a 74-68 win, 2-seed Kansas beat 7-seed Oklahoma, 69-62, 3-seed Texas got two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to beat 6-seed Texas Tech, 67-66, and 5-seed Oklahoma State beat 4-seed West Virginia, 72-69.
- In the Big East quarterfinals, 1-seed Villanova was upset by 8-seed Georgetown, 72-71, 2-seed Creighton annihilated 10-seed Butler, 87-56, 3-seed UConn destroyed 11-seed DePaul, 94-60, and 5-seed Seton Hall kept its NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a 77-69 OT win over 4-seed St. John's.
- In the Big Sky quarterfinals, top seed Southern Utah downed 8-seed Northern Colorado, 91-83, 2-seed Eastern Washington beat 10-seed Northern Arizona, 66-60, 3-seed Weber State was upset by 6-seed Montana, 80-75, and 5-seed Montana State beat 4-seed Idaho State.
- In the Big West quarterfinals, 1-seed UC Santa Barbara beat 8-seed Long Beach State, 95-87, 2-seed UC Irvine bounced 10-seed Cal Poly, 58-51, 3-seed UC Riverside beat 6-seed Hawaii, 62-52, and 4-seed UC Davis squeaked by 5-seed Cal State Bakersfield, 58-56.
- In the Conference USA quarterfinals, East 1-seed Western Kentucky beat West 4-seed UTSA, 73-60, West 1-seed Louisiana Tech topped East 4-seed FAU, 75-69, West 3-seed North Texas beat East 2-seed Old Dominion, 61-55, and West 2-seed UAB downed West 6-seed Rice, 73-60.
- In the second half of the MAAC quarterfinals, 3-seed St. Peter's (the highest remaining seed) topped 11-seed Rider, 75-60, and 5-seed Niagara beat 4-seed Marist, 67-62. Somewhere Rik Smits is crying, presumably while dunking, and Calvin Murphy is smiling, presumably while making free throws and twirling a baton.
- In the MAC quarterfinals, 1-seed Toledo escaped with a 91-89 OT win over 8-seed Ball State, 2-seed Buffalo beat 7-seed Miami (OH), 74-63, 3-seed Akron downed 6-seed Bowling Green, 74-67, and 5-seed Ohio crushed 4-seed Kent State, 85-63.
- In the MEAC quarterfinals, North 3-seed Morgan State topped South 2-seed Florida A&M, 77-75, and North 2-seed Norfolk State thumped South 3-seed North Carolina Central, 87-58.
- In the Mountain West quarterfinals, 1-seed San Diego State barely survived 8-seed Wyoming, 69-66, 2-seed Utah State made easy work of 7-seed UNLV, 74-53, 3-seed Colorado State beat 6-seed Fresno State, 72-62, and 5-seed Nevada beat 4-seed Boise State, 89-82, likely crushing the Broncos' hopes of an NCAA Tournament bid.
- In the Pac-12 quarterfinals, top-seed Oregon cruised to a 91-73 win over 8-seed Arizona State, 2-seed USC needed two overtimes to finish off 7-seed Utah, 91-85, 3-seed Colorado survived 11-seed Cal, 61-58, and 5-seed Oregon State beat 4-seed UCLA in OT, 83-79.
- In the Third Round of the Southland, which is effectively their quarterfinals, 3-seed Sam Houston State fell to 6-seed Lamar, 70-69, and 4-seed Northwestern State outlasted 5-seed New Orleans, 82-79.
- In the second half of the SWAC quarterfinals, 3-seed Texas Southern cruised past 6-seed Alcorn State, 78-55, and 4-seed Grambling State beat rival 5-seed Southern in OT, 72-67.
- In the WAC quarterfinals, 3-seed new Mexico State beat 6-seed UTRGV, 77-61, and 4-seed Seattle beat up on 5-seed California Baptist, 83-66. Somewhere Elgin Baylor is smiling.
- In the Second Round of the Big Ten, 5-seed Ohio State eked out a 79-75 win over 13-seed Minnesota, 6-seed Wisconsin won a nail biter over 11-seed Penn State, 75-74, and 7-seed Rutgers beat my hapless 10-seed Indiana Hoosiers, 61-50, in what will hopefully be the last game of the Archie Miller era at IU, and in a battle of bubble teams, 8-seed Maryland beat 9-seed Michigan State, 68-57.
- In the Second Round of the SEC, 5-seed Florida held off 12-seed Vanderbilt, 69-63, 6-seed Ole Miss took care of 11-seed South Carolina, 76-59, 7-seed Missouri snuck by 10-seed Georgia, 73-70, and 9-seed Mississippi State beat 8-seed Kentucky, 74-73, ending the Wildcats' season with a 9-16 record, which is Kentucky's first losing season since 1988-1989 and worst winning percentage in a season since the 1926-1927 season when the Wildcats finished 3-13 under the tutelage of one-year head coach Basil Hayden, who oddly enough, is not the namesake of Basil Hayden's bourbon.
- In the First Round of the AAC, 6-seed UCF beat11-seed East Carolina, 72-62, 10-seed Tulane upended 7-seed Tulsa, 77-70, and 8-seed South Florida slipped past 9-seed Temple, 73-71.
- There are no championship games until tomorrow, but 17 tournaments have games today, and it's all semis and quarters, with 14 semifinals and 3 quarterfinals. Here's how it breaks down:
