CoronaVinyl Day 220 (G): Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye

For an explanation of CoronaVinyl, click here.

Today's CoronaVinyl category is "G," and like the last couple days, I have to go with a repeat artist, but the good news is that we're staying with Motown.  Today's selection is Marvin Gaye's 13th studio album, 1973's Let's Get It On.

By 1973, Gaye was already an established star, but the year before, he renegotiated his contract with Motown to get more creative control of his music.  Dealing with more mature (and obviously sexual) subject matters, with Let's Get It On, Gaye made his most commercially successful studio album and one of the most legendary and influential soul albums of all-time.

The album went to #2 on the Billboard album chart and topped the Billboard R&B album chart.  The title track was Gaye's second #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 and eleventh #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart.  In addition, "Come Get to This" was a Top 40 hit, going to #21 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as #3 on the Billboard R&B singles chart.  Finally, "You Sure Love to Ball" went to #50 on the former and #13 on the latter.

The album has received numerous accolades and placement on "best of" lists over the years, and it has influenced countless artists since its release.  The Spotify version of the album has two bonus tracks -- single versions of the title track and "You Sure Love to Ball."  I know we're a few days past Valentine's Day, but this album is just some good, old fashioned love-makin' music.

Favorite song from Side 1:  "Let's Get It On"
The title track is a soul classic, oozing with sexuality.  It will always have a place in my heart because I lost my virginity to the song -- well, thirty seconds of it anyway.

Favorite song from Side 2:  "You Sure Love to Ball"
This is another one that's pure sex, starting out with audio of a woman who appears to be in a state of heightened sexual arousal.
