CoronaVinyl Day 384 (D): McVicar Soundtrack by Roger Daltrey

For an explanation of CoronaVinyl, click here.

Today's CoronaVinyl category is "D," and I went with Roger Daltrey's 1981 soundtrack to the movie McVicar, a biopic in which Daltrey also starred in the titular role as English bank robber John McVicar.

Daltrey performed all of the songs on the soundtrack, and he was backed by some familiar faces:  his band mates from The Who, Pete Townshend on guitar, John Entwistle on bass, and Kenney Jones on drums.  Jones became the band's drummer after Keith Moon died in 1978, and he was a future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer in his own right as a member of Small Faces/Faces.

The soundtrack is pretty good.  If you're familiar with The Who's late '70s and early '80s work, it's definitely in line with that.  The album went to #22 on the Billboard album charts, making this Daltrey's highest-charting solo album in the U.S.  It also yielded two songs that charted on the Billboard Hot 100:  "Without Your Love" (#20, his highest-charting solo single in the U.S.) and "Free Me" (#53).

The album is not on Spotify, but someone made a YouTube playlist with the songs on the album, so I embedded that below.

Favorite Song on Side 1:  "Free Me"
The last song on the first side definitely sounds like a movie anthem about a bank robber, with Daltrey's impassioned wails of "freeeee meeeee!" and a backing horn section, giving it almost a James Bond type fee.

Favorite Song on Side 2:  "My Time is Gonna Come"
This one starts off with a wicked bass riff from Entwistle, and it's a fast-paced, funky little rock son.
