Retro Video of the Week: "Hey Jealousy" by Gin Blossoms

In this week's installment of "damn, that makes me feel old," tomorrow is the 30th anniversary of Gin Blossoms' second studio album and major label debut, New Miserable Experience.  The album kind of languished for nearly a year before the band released "Hey Jealousy" as a single in the summer of 1993 and A&M Records re-packaged the album with a new cover.

The album peaked at #30 on the Billboard album chart and eventually went quadruple platinum in the U.S., behind the strength of four Top 25 singles on the Billboard Hot 100:  "Hey Jealousy" (#25), "Until I Fall Away" (#21), "Found About You" (#25), and "Allison Road" (#24).

They followed that success up with "Til I Hear It From You," which was released on the Empire Records soundtrack and was the band's highest-charting single in the U.S. (#8).  The band released their next album, Congratulations I'm Sorry, in 1996 -- which featured their second Top 10 hit in the U.S., "Follow You Down" (#9) -- but they then broke up in 1997 until reuniting in the mid aughts.  They have released three albums since then, with the most recent coming in 2018.

Anywho, I went with "Hey Jealousy" because it's a great early '90s alt rock song, with one of the most '90s lyrics:  "And if you don't expect too much from me / You might not be let down."  The video is also pure early '90s, with shadowed figures, weird split screens, and lots of jerky camera work.
