Retro Video of the Week: "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" by Digable Planets

Tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of the release of alternative hip hop trio Digable Planets' debut album, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space).  Digable Planets combined hip hop and jazz, and the album produced their biggest hit, the cool and smooth "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" -- a hip hop song over jazz beats and instruments, including a stand-up bass and that infections trumpet riff.  The album was the group's biggest hit, reaching #15 on the Billboard album chart, and "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" was also the group's highest-charting song, also reaching #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as #1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart and #6 on the Billboard R&B singles chart.  It also won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

The video matches the vibe of the song, all in black and white with the group performing the song in a smoky jazz club for a bunch of hipster beatniks.
