CoronaVinyl Day 124 ('00s Live Album): Live at The Mayan, Los Angeles by The Dead Weather

The next stop in our journey through the decades of live albums takes us to the aughts, and I'm going with another one that I got through the Third Man Records Vault club -- The Dead Weather's Live at The Mayan, Los Angeles.

As you may or may not know, The Dead Weather was one of Jack White's "side projects" after The White Stripes disbanded.  It was a supergroup of sorts.  In addition to White, who played drums rather than lead guitar (and occasionally sang), the group consisted of Alison Mosshart of The Kills on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on lead guitar, and Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes on bass.  The group released three studio albums between 2009 and 2015.

This Live at The Mayan album wasn't released until 2017, the show was recorded in August 2009, about a month after the band released their debut album, Horehound.  In case you weren't sure that this was from 2009, before the beginning of the first song, Jack White urges the crowd to "put down your BlackBerries for five fucking minutes."

As you can see, the vinyl itself is a nice golden yellow, and the album cover has a Mayan temple coming out of LA.  The show is split into four sides.  Admittedly, The Dead Weather isn't my favorite Jack White endeavor -- which isn't to say that I don't like them, but just that I like The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and his solo stuff more.  That said, the album is a good live album, showing that this group of talented musicians had already gelled well, both in the studio and on the stage.

The live album isn't on Spotify, so I'm just embedding Horehound, since eight of the ten songs on the live album are from Horehound.

Favorite song from Side 1:  "You Just Can't Win"
White takes lead vocal duties for this Them cover, and it's appropriately creepy and fuzzed out at the same time.

Favorite song from Side 2:  "A Child of A Few Hours is Burning to Death"
I'm not sure there's a more intense song title out there.  This is a cover of a song by the late '60s psychedelic rock band The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and Mossheart and White share lead vocals while the band as a whole rains thunder.

Favorite song from Side 3:  "Will There Be Enough Water?"
This is the only song on this side, so it was an easy choice.  And I think, to answer the question, yes, there will be plenty of water.  It's the most abundant resource on the planet, and thanks to global warming, polar ice caps are melting and water levels are rising.  Soon, there will be far too much water, as many coastal cities will be permanently flooded.

Favorite song from Side 4:  "Treat Me Like Your Mother"
This song has almost a '90s grunge feel to it, with a lot of feedback and the like.
