How
'bout them Hoosiers?! With a last-minute
come-from-behind victory at Michigan, IU won the regular season Big Ten title
outright for the first time since 1993, and I nearly made my children cry with
the volume of my yelling and hysterical running around the house after IU won.
Minnesota
continued its quest to knock itself out of the NCAA tournament by losing to
Purdue yesterday, bringing both teams to an 8-10 record in league play,
clinching the #9 seed. This is not
particularly good for the Big Ten because it sets up an 8/9 first round matchup
with Illinois, which may mean the NIT for the loser, as the winner will face IU
in what should be a tough quarterfinal matchup.
And it doesn't get easier, assuming the Hoosiers make it to the semis,
because the 4/5 matchup will be Wisconsin and Michigan (assuming Michigan gets
past Penn State in their first-round rubber match). I would have to think a Big Ten Tournament
title would net the Hoosiers the #1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, but
it's March, so I dare not count my chickens before they've hatched.
The
next four weeks are essentially the greatest four weeks in the sports year, and
the Madness has already started with Championship Week. Between yesterday and next Sunday, 34
automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament will be handed out, dreams will be
realized, hearts will be broken, and co-eds will be made love to. It's just a fact.
As
you may know, I am manic this time of year.
Every night this week, I will be watching conference tournament
championships. If I watch anything less
than 20 hours of college basketball over the next 7 days, I will consider
myself more of a failure than every man who has ever put on a Purdue basketball
jersey. And then once Selection Sunday
comes around, well, I will be in a state of nirvana for 22 days.
The
first three bids were handed out yesterday.
Florida Gulf Coast has clinched the first automatic bid –- its first
ever trip to the Big Dance, in only its second year of D-1 postseason
eligibility –- with a win over Mercer in the Atlantic Sun championship game. Meanwhile, Harvard clinched the regular
season Ivy League crown and Belmont topped Murray State in a 70-68 OT thriller
for the Ohio Valley tournament title to earn bids to the NCAA Tournament. Over in the Horizon League semifinals, both
Wright State and Valpo advanced to the finals on buzzer beaters. That Valpo three was ridiculous.
Today,
the Liberty Flames, who were one of the worst teams in the Big South regular
season, surprised top-seeded Charleston Southern to win the Big South (and, in
all likelihood, a trip to Dayton for the play-in round). In the Missouri Valley final, Creighton
topped Wichita State.
Tomorrow,
5 bids are up for grabs (times are Eastern):
-CAA
- 7 p.m. (NBC Sports) (1) Northeastern vs. (3) James Madison
-Southern
Conference - 7 p.m. (ESPN2) (1) Davidson vs. winner of (2) Elon vs. (3) College

Kentucky
-MAAC
- 9 p.m. (ESPN2) (4) Iona vs. (6) Manhattan
-West
Coast - 9 p.m. (ESPN) (1) Gonzaga vs. (2) St. Mary's
As
I have done in years past, I will be making my Championship Week predictions,
updating them daily, as I will undoubtedly be proven wrong on no more than
three occasions.
With
that, here is who has already clinched an automatic berth, as well as my
predictions for the remaining conference tournaments. (Note:
The Great West Conference holds a tournament, but does not receive an
automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, so I am not including it here.)
Because
I am essentially psychotic about college basketball in March, I have not only
listed out every game and my predictions, but the date, time, and TV station(s)
on which the game will appear, even if it's just local or regional, to the extent
that information is available. Some
conference tournament websites are better than others. I want this to be as comprehensive as
possible, so that you can always come here to figure out when any team is
playing. Sometimes, I care too much.

appearances, including the bid just clinched):
