With this week's 50th anniversary of The Beatles' first trip to the U.S. and their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, there is no better time than the present to feature a Beatle on Retro Video of the Week. I'm going with "Got My Mind Set On You" by George Harrison, which until today, I had no idea was a cover song, but apparently, it was originally performed by James Ray in 1962.
The song went all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts in early 1988, making it the last #1 song by any of the solo Beatles and also giving George his third #1 song in the U.S., breaking a three-way tie with John and Ringo for second-most #1 songs by solo Beatles (Paul leads the way with 9 #1s in the U.S.). FYI, George's other #1s in the U.S. were "My Sweet Lord," which stayed at the top spot for four weeks in December 1970 and January 1971, and "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)" in June 1973, which knocked Paul McCartney & Wings's "My Love" from the top spot and was knocked out of the top spot a week later by "Will It Go Round In Circles" by Beatles collaborator Billy Preston. That's kind of cool.
Anyway, here's the video:
