Many apologies for failing to post a Tuesday Top Ten yesterday. I was having dinner with Paul Allen at Texarkana. The mud soup and charcoal arugula are outrageous there.
From about 1989-1993, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ruled all mediums. They had an insanely popular cartoon, three live-action movies, and not one but two Nintendo games.
Because it was the early '90s, it was inevitable that Vanilla Ice would cross paths with the Ninja Turtles, and he did so in 1991 in their second live-action film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, which not only featured a cameo by the Iceman, but also featured his TMNT-themed original rap, aptly entitled "Ninja Rap."
Why is the relevant now, you ask? Well, fine reader, the good people at Kraft -- maker of the most beloved macaroni and cheese in the world -- have reunited Vanilla Ice and the Ninja Turtles, sort of anyway. Kraft is releasing a TMNT mac and cheese, and Vanilla Ice himself is featured in the commercial as a grocery store stock boy. (Thanks to The Weez for the link.) Thanks to the new version of the Ninja Turtles cartoon, my kids are now just as into mutants as I was when I was a boy. Now, thanks to Kraft, they can eat mutants too!
Here is the video for "Ninja Rap," featuring totally hype '90s dance moves, dancing mutant turtles in their teens, and a cameo by the venerable Splinter. There is also a brief interview with Vanilla Ice at the end. Go ninja go ninja go!
