Updated Championship Week Predictions

In the prescient words of Lloyd Christmas, we're there, man.  All of the conference tournament brackets are set.  Things are about to get crazy.  We are less than a week until Selection Sunday.

Here are the highlights from yesterday's Championship Week action.  Three more tickets to the Big Dance were punched, and we're in that sweet spot where the MAC, MAAC, and MEAC are all playing on the same day.

In the Missouri Valley, 4-seed Northern Iowa blew a double-digit halftime lead to 2-seed Evansville before Northern Iowa's senior guard Wes Washpun hit a fade-away 18-footer as time expired to give the Panthers a thrilling 56-54 win.  The Panthers are going to their 8th NCAA Tournament and second in a row.

In the Big South, 4-seed UNC-Asheville topped 2-seed Winthrop, 76-66. The Bulldogs will be playing in their 4th NCAA Tournament and first since 2012.

The Atlantic Sun final was a good one.  7-seed Stetson was literally playing for nothing.  Due to APR infractions, the Hatters were ineligible to go to the NCAA Tournament.  Why they were even allowed to compete in the conference tournament is beyond me, but it made for some unusual drama because, if they would have beaten 4-seed Florida Gulf Coast, then regular season champs North Florida would get the Atlantic Sun's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  But it didn't come to that.  Florida Gulf Coast came up with a huge block of what would have been a game-tying layup with about 4 seconds left in OT, to pull out a 80-78 win.  The Eagles clinched their second NCAA Tournament bid and first since 2013, when "Dunk City" became the first 15-seed to advance to the Sweet 16.

In the CAA semis, top seed Hofstra held off 5-seed William & Mary 70-67, while 2-seed UNC-Wilmington downed 6-seed Northeastern 73-70.  The Pride will be playing for their 5th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2001, and the Seahawks will be playing for their 5th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2006.

In the MAAC semis, 1-seed Monmouth handled 5-seed Fairfield 76-63, and 2-seed Iona topped 3-seed Siena.  The Hawks will be playing for their 5th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2006, when I saw them beat Hampton in the play-in game in Dayton.  The Gaels will be playing for their 11th NCAA Tournament bid and their first since 2013.

In the Patriot League semis, 9-seed Holy Cross continued its Cinderella run by knocking off 4-seed Army, while 2-seed Lehigh dominated American.  When they clash on Wednesday, the Crusaders -- who, of course, have more NCAA titles than Purdue, Illinois, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Texas, and Oklahoma combined -- will be playing for their 13th NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2007, while the Mountain Hawks will be playing for their 6th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2012, when they knocked off Duke in the first round.

In the SoCon semis, top-seeded Chattanooga squeaked by 5-seed Wofford, 73-69, which means there will be no Terriers in this year's NCAA Tournament.  In the other semi, 2-seed ETSU downed 3-seed Furman 84-76.  The Mocs will be playing for their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2009, while the Buccaneers will be playing for their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2010.

All three of tonight's championship games should be good ones, as they all pit 1-seeds against 2-seeds.
