Updated Championship Week Predictions

It's nights like last night when I wish I still had three TVs in my living room.  Don't ever get married.  All at once, I found myself trying to watch the last minutes of the MAAC final, the CAA final, and the first Horizon League semifinal -- all of which were extremely close games.  My command of the "PREV" button on the remote was nothing short of remarkable.  Here are the highlights from yesterday's Championship Week action.  Three more automatic berths were clinched, and four more 1-seeds lost.

In the CAA final, top seed Hofstra and 2-seed UNC-Wilmington went to overtime, where UNCW pulled out an 80-73 victory.  The Seahawks are going to their 5th NCAA Tournament and first since 2006.

In the MAAC final, 1-seed Monmouth fell to 2-seed Iona, 79-76.  The Gaels will be going to their 11th NCAA Tournament and first since 2013.  Now the big question is whether Monmouth will get an at-large big to the Big Dance.  The Hawks' RPI is 56 (although BPI is 87), they have an amazing 17 road/neutral wins this year (which leads Division 1), and they beat Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, and Georgetown (and only lost by 3 to Dayton).  Whether the Selection Committee thinks that is enough remains to be seen.  It'll be an anxious six days in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

In the SoCon final, top-seeded Chattanooga beat 2-seed ETSU, 73-67.  The Mocs -- who, in 1997, became only the second 14-seed to advance to the Sweet 16 -- will be playing in their 11th NCAA Tournament and first since 2009.  They are also the only 1-seed that has won its conference tournament thus far in Championship Week.

In the WCC semis, top seeded St. Mary's beat 4-seed Pepperdine handily, 81-66, to advance to tonight's final, where they will meet 2-seed Gonzaga, who held off 3-seed BYU 88-84.  The Gaels will be playing for their 9th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2013, and they should be in the Big Dance win or lose, with an RPI of 35 and a BPI of 27.  The Bulldogs will be playing for their 19th NCAA Tournament appearance and 18th in a row, and they may not make it to the NCAA Tournament without a win.  While their BPI is 24, their RPI is 61 and they don't have any signature wins, having blown chances in close losses to Texas A&M, Arizona, and St. Mary's (twice).

In the America East semis, 1-seed Stony Brook trounced 7-seed Hartford, while 3-seed Vermont topped 4-seed New Hampshire.  When they play on Saturday, the Seawolves will be playing for their first ever NCAA Tournament berth (despite winning the regular season America East title three times before this year), and the Catamounts will be playing for their 6th NCAA Tournament bid and first since 2012.

In the Horizon League semis, 1-seed Valparaiso and 4-seed Green Bay played a thriller.  Valpo was down two with 2.1 seconds left in regulation and 94 feet from the basket.  They're coached by Bryce Drew, who knows a little something about buzzer beaters after long passes.  The inbounder, Jubril Adekoya, effortlessly threw the ball about 85 feet, just over the outstretched hands of a Green Bay defender and right into the hands of Adekoya's teammate Alec Peters, who laid it in to send the game to OT.  Then Green Bay took over and ended up winning by 7 in overtime.  Valpo (RPI 53; BPI 41) is another team that may steal an at-large bid, although it's more of an outside shot than Monmouth.  The Phoenix will be playing for their 5th NCAA Tournament and first since 1996.  The other semi was a great game, too, as 3-seed Wright State beat 2-seed Oakland 58-55, holding Division 1's top scoring team over 30 points below their average.  The Raiders will be playing for their 3rd NCAA Tournament bid and first since 2007.

In the Summit League semis, both games came down to the final seconds.  Top seed IPFW fell to 5-seed North Dakota State, as the Bison eliminated a 15-point halftime deficit to win 69-68 on a go-ahead layup with 4 seconds left.  The Bison will be playing for their 4th NCAA Tournament berth and third in a row.  In the other semi, 2-seed South Dakota State blew an eight-point halftime lead and was down double digits to 6-seed Denver in the second half, before going on an 18-4 run over the last five minutes of the game to win 54-53.  The Jackrabbits made a free throw with 2 seconds left, but then fouled Denver player with 1 second left, but Denver missed the front end of the 1-and-1, and that was the game.  South Dakota State will be playing for its 3rd NCAA Tournament and first since 2013.
