Updated Championship Week Predictions

Here are the highlights from yesterday's Championship Week action.  Four more automatic berths were clinched, and two more 1-seeds lost.

In the WCC final, top seeded St. Mary's fell to 2-seed Gonzaga, 85-75, to end all discussion of whether the Zags would receive an at-large bid if they didn't win the WCC Tournament.  They will be playing in their 19th NCAA Tournament and 18th in a row.  The Gaels should be in the NCAA Tournament as well, even with the loss.

In the Horizon League final, 4-seed Green Bay beat 3-seed Wright State 78-69 to earn the school's 5th NCAA Tournament bid and first since 1996.  The Phoenix have been a tough out in their previous trips to the Big Dance, winning a game in 1994 as a 12-seed and all but one of their four losses were by five or fewer points.  Granted, those were all 20-25 years ago, but I just though you should know.

In the Summit League final, 2-seed South Dakota State and 5-seed North Dakota State battled for the league's automatic bid for the fourth time in the last five years, and this will be the fifth year in a row that one of the two teams has represented the Summit League in the NCAA Tournament.  This year, South Dakota State came out on top, 67-59.  The Jackrabbits will be playing in its 3rd NCAA Tournament and first since 2013.

In the NEC final, 2-seed Fairleigh-Dickinson -- which, for my entire life until tonight, I have been misspelling as Farleigh-Dickinson -- marched into the Spiro Sports Center and beat 1-seed Wagner on its home court, 87-79.  The Knights clinched their 5th NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2005.

Other than the championship games, nothing too exciting or out of the ordinary happened last night.  There is only one bid up for grabs tonight (the Patriot League), and then we have a hiatus on championship games until Saturday.  Yesterday, there were 16 games played (including Princeton's win over Penn, which was not a conference tournament game).  All but four of the remaining conference tournaments start today.  Things are about to get heavy.  Over the next five days, there will be 167 conference tournament games:  33 games today, 61 games tomorrow, 44 games Friday, 24 games Saturday, and the final 5 games on Sunday.  We're in the shit, people, although this shit don't stink.
