Updated Championship Week Predictions: "Feels Like the First Time"

Today's Championship Week song is Foreigner's 1977 hit "Feels Like the First Time" because three of the first five bids to the NCAA Tournament were clinched by schools that have never been to the Big Dance before.  We also had several 1-seeds go down:  Bucknell in the Patriot, Chattanooga in the SoCon, and South Alabama in the Sun Belt.  And various other top seeds lost before they should have!  And all of the conference tournament brackets have been set!  Madness!

Also, please note that my "bubble" is quite expansive, including any team generally projected to be an 8-seed or worse, as well as teams that are on various "bubble watch" type lists (even the ones that have slim hopes) and strong mid-majors who are projected to win their conference tournaments, but could also potentially steal an at-large bid.  And, of course, the bubble may expand if marginal teams get on a roll.

Here's what happened yesterday and what we have to look forward to today:

• In the Atlantic Sun title game, top seed Lipscomb pulled away from 2-seed North Alabama late in the second half for a 76-65 win, earning the Bisons their second trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2018.
• In the Big South chamionship,1-seed High Point downed 3-seed Winthrop, 81-69, the clinching the Panthers' first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
• In the MVC title game, top seed Drake roughed up 2-seed Bradley, 63-48.  The Bulldogs will be playing in their 8th NCAA Tournament and third in a row.  The Braves could potentially get an at-large bid, but that may depend on how other bubble teams fare this week.
• In the Summit championship game, top seed Omaha beat 2-seed St. Thomas, 85-75, but it was all academic because the Tommies are still in the transition period to D-1 and aren't eligible for the NCAA Tournament, so win or lose, the Mavericks got the automatic bid, which is their first in program history.
• In the Patriot semifinals, 5-seed Navy upset 1-seed Bucknell, 83-77, while 2-seed American outlasted 3-seed Colgate, 72-62.  For the first time since 2018 (since the 2020 NCAA Tournament wasn't played), the Patriot League's representative in the NCAA Tournament won't be Colgate.  When they face off in Wednesday's title game, the Midshipmen will be playing for their 12th NCAA Tournament bid and first since 1998, while the Eagles will be playing for their 4th and first since 2014.
• In the SoCon semis, 5-seed Furman upset top-seed Chattanooga, 80-77 in OT, and 6-seed Wofford dominated 7-seed VMI, 85-65.  When they match up in tonight's championship game, the Paladins will be playing for their 8th NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2023 (when they upset Virginia in the first round as a 13-seed), and the Terriers will be playing for their 6th berth and first since 2019.
• In the Sun Belt semifinals, 4-seed Arkansas State upset 1-seed South Alabama, 74-71, and 3-seed Troy stomped on 2-seed James Madison, 79-60, to advance to tonight's championship game, where the Red Wolves will be seeking their 2nd NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 1999, and the Trojans will be seeking their 3rd appearance and first since 2017.
• In the CAA quarterfinals, 1-seed Towson held off 8-seed Drexel, 82-76, 2-seed UNC Wilmington beat 10-seed Hampton, 79-65, 3-seed Charleston needed OT to eliminate 6-seed Monmouth, 79-78, and 12-seed Delaware continued its unlikely run, upsetting 4-seed William & Mary in convincing fashion, 100-78, to advance to today's semifinals.
• In the WCC quarterfinals, 9-seed Pepperdine upset 4-seed (and some commentators' dark horse pick to win the WCC) Santa Clara, 78-76, and 3-seed San Francisco ousted 6-seed Washington State, 86-75, to advance to tonight's semifinals.
• In the first half of the Big Sky quarterfinals, top seed Northern Colorado trounced 9-seed Weber State, 76-52, and 2-seed Montana pulled away from 7-seed Northern Arizona, 74-65, to advance to tomorrow night's semifinals.
• In the First Round of the Southland, 5-seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi bounced 8-seed Houston Christian, and 7-seed Incarnate Word beat 6-seed Southeastern Louisiana, 71-67 in OT, to advance to today's second round, which is effectively the quarterfinals.
