It is with great sadness that I report to you the news that Franz Nicolay will be leaving The Hold Steady. He was, of course, the band's keyboard (and occasional accordion) player, known for his Rollie Fingers mustache, three-piece suits, and bottle of wine that accompanied him on stage. Nicolay has also released a solo album, and apparently has a solo EP in the works. In addition, he has a book due out in February and is producing an album for The Debutante Hour. I also presume he has some sort of mustache wax endorsement to fall back on.
As a Hold Steady fan, I can say that he will be sorely missed. Thanks to Can Can for being the bearer of bad news.
