The first selection in my beer advent calendar is Begyle's When Cranberries Fly. Begyle is one of my favorite local breweries. They do good things with most styles of beer. I'm not a fan of hoppier beers, but their stouts and porters -- particularly Flannel Pajamas, Imperial Pajamas (their main barrel-aged stout), Snooze Button, and Pinball Wizard -- and their Christmas Ale are great. Around this time of year, they usually have an Imperial Pajamas tasting/release event at the brewery, where they tap one-time kegs of various flavors and variants of Imperial Pajamas -- like Hazelnut, S'mores, Churro, Sweet Potato Pie, and the like -- throughout the day, and once that keg is gone, that's it for that particular variant. It's a good time, especially for those of us who enjoy the darker beers.
When Cranberries Fly is a sour, brewed with cranberries. The picture doesn't quite do it justice, but the color is definitely pink. I don't particularly like sours, although I can stomach them better when the fruit on which they are based is actually sour or tart. This one is not offensively sour, and the fact that it's made from cranberries makes it more palatable than other sours for me.
