Championship Week is Here!

The Madness is here.  It's here.  And, for once, I'm not talking about the English band that sang "Our House."

March (un)officially begins today, as Championship Week is upon us.  Between today's match-ups in the first round of the Atlantic Sun, Big South, Horizon League, and Patriot League tournaments and the final horn in the Big Ten Tournament championship game on the Ides of March, 32 conference champions will be crowned (31 of them through conference tournaments), earning automatic bids to the greatest tournament in sports:  the NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament. 

These next two weeks are some of the most exciting in sports.  I love Championship Week, not only because of the inherent drama associated with one-and-done tournaments, but also because, for a lot of the smaller schools in one-bid conferences, making the NCAA Tournament is the pinnacle.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again:  there is nothing like the pure joy you see when a low-major or mid-major team rushes the court after clinching an NCAA berth, or the heartbreak and tears on the opposite bench for the team knowing it just missed its only chance at the Big Dance.  And, of course, as the last five years have shown us –- with the likes of Butler, Gonzaga, VCU, Northern Iowa, St. Mary's, Cornell, Wichita State, Richmond, Xavier, Ohio, Florida Gulf Coast, LaSalle, Dayton, and San Diego State all making it to the Sweet Sixteen or beyond -- mid-majors and low-majors should not be overlooked in the NCAA Tournament.  Consider Championship Week your opportunity to beef up your knowledge of this year's college basketball teams before you fill out your brackets in two short weeks.

We've had some more conference realignments over the past year, so some conferences are larger or smaller than before, resulting in some changes in formatting to some conference tournaments.  Hopefully, the shuffling will die down for a few years –- not that Mercer's move from the Atlantic Sun to the Southern Conference wasn't warranted.

Over the next two weeks, I will be making Championship Week predictions as conference tournaments begin and/or are seeded.  Thus far, 13 conferences have ended their regular seasons and set their conference tournament brackets.  I'll try to update this daily.

As a frame of reference, of my initial Championship Week predictions last year, I was 12 of 31 in correctly predicting the eventual conference tournament champion.  This, of course, means absolutely nothing, and nor do my predictions, apparently.

The first bids to be clinched will be this weekend:
