Yesterday was another solid day of college basketball. There were some more bids clinched, and there were some upsets in a few tournaments, with top seeds going down in the semis. Elsewhere, all of the remaining conference tournament brackets have been set. Get ready for insanity this week. And next week. And the week after that. And the week after that.
Here are some highlights from yesterday's Championship Week action:
Here are some highlights from yesterday's Championship Week action:
- In the MVC Tournament, Wichita State topped Indiana State 83-69 to win their first MVC Tournament title since 1987 and push their record to 34-0. With the win, Wichita State becomes the first school since UNLV in 1991 to enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated, and ties that UNLV team for the longest winning streak during one season.
- In the Big South, Coastal Carolina beat Winthrop, clinching the Chanticleers' 3rd NCAA Tournament berth and first since 1993. Coastal Carolina head coach Cliff Ellis became the tenth coach in NCAA history who has taken four different schools to the NCAA Tournament, having previously coached South Alabama, Clemson, and Auburn into the Big Dance.
- In the Atlantic Sun, 2-seed Mercer upset Florida Gulf Coast to clinch the Bears' first NCAA Tournament berth since 1985.
- In the CAA, 1-seed Delaware and 3-seed William and Mary won their semifinal games, setting up tonight's final. The Fighting Blue Hens will be playing for their 5th NCAA Tournament berth and first since 1999, while William and Mary is playing for their first NCAA Tournament appearance, and is one of only 5 original Division 1 schools never to have played in the NCAA Tournament.
- In the America East, top seed Vermont was upset by 4-seed Albany. In the other semifinal, 2-seed Stony Brook beat 3-seed Hartford. They will meet Saturday for the league title. Stony Brooks is going for its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, and Albany is playing for its 4th NCAA Tournament berth and second in a row.
- In the MAAC, the 1- and 2-seeds, Iona and Manhattan, advanced to tonight's final. Iona is going for its 11th NCAA Tournament berth and third in a row, while Manhattan is going for its 7th appearance and first since 2004, when the Jaspers upset Florida in the first round in a 5-12 matchup.
- In the SoCon, 5-seed Western Carolina upset 1-seed Davidson, which only lost one conference game in the regular season. In the other semi, 3-seed Wofford beat 7-seed Georgia Southern. The Catamounts are playing for their second NCAA Tournament appearance. In their first berth, in 1996, they almost became the first 16-seed to beat a 1-seed, when they came up one shot short against Purdue. The Terriers will be playing for their 3rd NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2011.

*Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling, Mississippi Valley State, and Southern are ineligible to compete in the NCAA Tournament for failing to meet the NCAA's APR requirements, but they are allowed to participate in the SWAC Tournament. If one of the ineligible teams wins the tournament, the team among the six eligible teams that advances the furthest in the tournament will receive the conference's NCAA tournament bid. If there is a tie (for example, all remaining tournament-eligible teams are eliminated in the same round), the automatic berth will go to the highest-seeded team. Thus, under my predictions here, Texas Southern would get the automatic bid.
