There were some great games once again last night, with four bids clinched. Here are some highlights from yesterday's Championship Week action:
Here are the tournaments starting today, the tournaments with games today, bids up for grab today, who has already clinched an automatic berth, and my predictions for the remaining conference tournaments.
- In the Horizon League, 5-seed Milwaukee upset 3-seed Wright State at the Nutter Center in Dayton to earn the Panthers their 4th NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2006, when, as an 11-seed, they beat 6-seed Oklahoma in the first round before losing to 3-seed Florida in the second round -- a year after the Panthers went to the Sweet 16 as a 12-seed in Bruce Pearl's final year in Milwaukee.
- In the NEC, 4-seed Mount St. Mary's upset the top seed Robert Morris, handily at that. For the second year in a row, Robert Morris won the NEC regular season title, but lost in the championship game at home. As the regular season champ, however, they will get another trip to the NIT, after infamously upsetting defending NCAA champion Kentucky in the first round of the NIT last year. As for the Mountaineers, this is their 4th NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2008, where they won their play-in game against Coppin State before getting annihilated by North Carolina. Given their 16-16 record, I would expect them to be going to Dayton for the "First Four" again.
- In the Summit League, top seed North Dakota State held off 2-seed IPFW in a 60-57 thriller. The Bison are going to their second NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2009. With the loss, IPFW remains the only D-1 program in the State of Indiana that has not been to an NCAA Tournament. Coincidentally, barring a miracle, it doesn't look like any schools from Indiana will make the Big Dance this year.
- In the West Coast, top seed Gonzaga beat 2-seed BYU to clinch the Bulldogs' 17th NCAA Tournament appearance and 16th in a row. It's old hat at this point for Gonzaga. The question for the Zags is whether they can get to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. As you may recall, last year, they were a #1 seed for the first time in program history, but lost in the second round to Wichita State on the Shockers' way to the Final Four.

*Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling, Mississippi Valley State, and Southern are ineligible to compete in the NCAA Tournament for failing to meet the NCAA's APR requirements, but they are allowed to participate in the SWAC Tournament. If one of the ineligible teams wins the tournament, the team among the six eligible teams that advances the furthest in the tournament will receive the conference's NCAA tournament bid. If there is a tie (for example, all remaining tournament-eligible teams are eliminated in the same round), the automatic berth will go to the highest-seeded team. Thus, under my predictions here, Texas Southern would get the automatic bid.
